Artist Residency 2019

Late afternoon sun on Kentmere Pike, before a band of hail swept across the valley

Sense of Here is about gathering views and bringing different points of view together. We’re delighted to have been awarded seed funding from Great Place: Lakes and Dales to support a residency for four creative people to join us for creative reflection on the Lake District and meet curators at the Wordsworth Trust and Grizedale Forest. If you’re interested, or indeed know someone who is, please share the opportunity!

This invitation is open to emerging / early career artists who live or work in and around the South Lakes and Craven regions and wish to reflect on place through their own creative media. The residency will take place in September 2019, with work to be produced by December 2019.

The residency provides a chance to experience the Lake District with new perspectives, to share insights and methods, to learn from curators and other artists, to receive mentoring, to build new networks and to kindle new collaborations.

Award recipients will receive £500. They will be hosted for three nights, with mentoring and guidance for three days, and will be required to produce work to share online in 2019. In 2020 they will co-curate an exhibition that will include their work at the Wordsworth Museum.

This residency is part of the Great Place: Lakes and Dales programme, and as such we’re keen to hear from artists who live or work in the South Lakes and Craven regions and are age 18-35. The offer is not limited to these parameters, however, and selection will be made on the basis of merit. We know there’s a lot of talent out there, so we’re looking forward to receiving a diverse collection of applications.

EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE: 5pm August 9th 2019

    • Hi Angela

Thanks for getting in touch. Hope all is well with you.

This residency has been funded through the Great Place: Lakes and Dales programme, which is looking to encourage ‘young’ creatives within a geographically defined region to stay, rather than be lured away by the bright lights of elsewhere. We’ve been fortunate to have been one of the projects receiving their support, and are really happy to be able to play a part in creating opportunities for younger people who so often feel they have to go to the cities, or at least leave their local areas, to find opportunities to develop their creative practices. For this residency we are therefore particularly keen to encourage applications from artists in the region who are aged 18-35, but we are open to applications outside this age group. Selection will be based on merit.

You can find out more about Great Place : Lakes and Dales here: https://www.lakesanddales.org.

In 2020 we’ll be hosting a second set of residencies as part of Sense of Here. More about that next year 🙂

      All the very best,

      harriet and rob
